Help the Academic Center for English Studies (ACES) at SJC Brooklyn with funding to support our cultural events for students!
The ACES Program is an intensive reading and writing Learning Community for high-achieving recent immigrant and international students for whom English is a new language. ACES provides educational, social and financial assistance as well as professional guidance to the aforementioned population. Through specialized teaching, tutoring, workshops, advising, counseling services, mentoring opportunities and cultural outings, the ACES staff meets the College's mission and goals of providing students a strong academic and values-oriented education that develops the whole person.
Program Curriculum, Culture and Community:
Cultural outings are at the core of what makes ACES special. ACES courses are taught by instructors who introduce a unique style of teaching to encourage participation and improvement. Our theme-based literature and composition curriculum encourages experiential learning; we visit theaters, museums, and historical sites within the context of the themes we study. As a result, ACES students, many of whom are on the Dean’s List, are high achievers at the top of their classes. They are our valedictorians, SGA officers, and they are the embodiment of our college mission. ACES Professors and Staff accompany students to cultural events throughout the city where freshmen are able to meet ACES upperclassmen and feel a sense of community. Past trips have included events or exhibitions at BAM, Playwrights Horizons, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Tenement Museum, the Neue Galerie, and The Public Theater. ACES also hosts regular informative workshops for students on campus for help with grammar, financial aid, time management, and course registration. We also sponsor guest lecturers on campus with our cultural funding.
We depend on the support of donors to maintain and nurture our program - cultural and community. Experiential and social learning are at the heart of what we do at ACES and we need your help! Your support will go directly towards providing funding for cultural outings for students to enrich the academic experience of ACES students.
