Phonathon is one of the most celebrated ways where alumni come together in friendly competition to support the St. John's Fund. This fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts, and we ask every alumnus, parent, grandparent, faculty member, and friend to make it their first and most meaningful gift.
The St. John's Fund plays a vital role in maintaining the excellence of a St. John's School education, covering 10% of the School's budget. It directly supports faculty salaries and professional development, financial aid, technology, and programs in arts and athletics—touching every aspect of the student experience.
For more than 70 years, St. John's School has been more than just a place of learning—it has been a home, a family, and a launching pad for success. This year, our goal is to rally 210 alumni to participate and we're calling on 30 alumni from each decade to step up and show their support.
Every donation, no matter the size, helps ensure that future generations experience the same tradition, excellence, and community that make St. John's so special.
Why is participation so important?
A gift to the St. John’s Fund is the first and most important gift we ask of community members. St. John's has always been a school built on generosity - ever since a group of thirty enthusiastic founders dreamt up the school and philanthropic individuals from around Houston financially committed to making the dream a reality. However, this School's community has greatly expanded past those initial thirty founders and it is not just the big dollar donations that make a difference to the school.
Last year, gifts of $500 and less totaled more than $240,000, which is greater than any single gift to the St. John's Fund.
Today your gift, no matter what the dollar amount is, matters because it is a vote of confidence in the School - our students, faculty, staff, facilities, fine arts, athletics, and security services. Your participation in the St. John's Fund is important because it demonstrates our community's investment in St. John's.
Are there other ways to make a gift to St. John's?
Yes, there are many ways to make a gift to St. John's! If you'd prefer to make your give via direct debit, check, stock, or wire transfer, click here for a full set of instructions on each of these ways to give. All gifts postmarked or received by March 24th will count towards Phonathon.
Can I make a pledge?
Yes. In order to book a pledge, the School must have written confirmation of the amount you plan to give. Pledges can be made online, or by emailing Annual Fund Associate Nadia Gonzalez at ngonzalez@sjs.org. St. John's Fund pledges must be fulfilled by June 30 in order to be credited for the current school year.
How do I make sure I am counted for "participation"?
St. John’s measures donor participation based on St. John's Fund giving only. One gift counts for all of the various constituencies a person may have within the School. So, an alumna from the Class of 1987 who also has two children attending St. John’s in the Classes of 2019 and 2024 would make only one St. John's Fund gift to boost participation for the Classes of 1987, 2019, and 2024.
To receive participation credit for this school year, gifts must be received by June 30.
Is my gift tax deductible?
St. John’s is a 501(c)(3) institution. Monetary gifts made to the School and receipted through the Advancement Office are tax deductible. However, gifts of “in-kind” services (i.e., professional services such as accounting, architectural, medical or legal, etc., for which the School would otherwise have had to pay a professional fee) are not tax deductible but will be recognized at the level the gift relieves the School of actual expenses, as determined in accordance with the provisions of the Gift Acceptance Policy.
To the extent the Advancement Office has been notified or is aware of a gift of service, such gift of service will be recognized in the “Gifts in Kind” section of the Report on Giving.
For your convenience, St. John's offers a variety of Ways to Give, including Giving Online. For more information, please contact the Advancement Office at 713-850-4022 or e-mail Nadia Gonzalez at ngonzalez@sjs.org.
