Celebrating five decades of the College Assistance Migrant Program!
We are proud to have the longest continuous CAMP program in the U.S., which has assisted 3,000 students since 1972. Our scholars are supported by a dedicated team, receive academic, financial and moral support, and are uplifted throughout their entire time at St. Edward’s and beyond so that they – and society – may thrive.
And now it's time to celebrate!
Meeting the needs of our CAMP students is vital to ensuring their success. A contribution from you will allow our program to continue to flourish, providing our scholars access to resources and opportunities that advance, promote and transform their personal and academic journeys. These include:
- School supplies
- Professional attire for interviews or events
- Travel supplies for when presenting at national conferences
- Graduate and professional schools entrance exam fees
- Access to technology
The campaign will run all through March, culminating in National Farmworkers Awareness Week which honors the daily contributions farmworkers make to our food system. Find out more about that here.
Your collective efforts over the entire CAMP Vive: La Lucha Sigue! campaign will make a huge difference to all of our CAMP scholars, supporting with mentorship, leadership development, and meaningful academic support. You have all demonstrated what it means to have true St. Edward's community spirit and strength, so let us leave you with a powerful message from one of our scholars: "CAMP provides us with an ability to transform ourselves into the members of society that St. Edward's already believes us to be...
On March 26, CAMP students proudly hosted our first-ever CAMP Day as part of the CAMP Vive: La Lucha Sigue! campaign. This entirely student-led event originated from a resolution passed within the Student Government Association, championed by CAMP Scholar Justin Trevino and fellow CAMP students serving as senators. Designed to honor the history and impact of the College Assistance Migrant Program at St. Edward’s University, the day was a resounding success! You can view some highlights from the event here.
The festivities began with Conchas and Coffee alongside a special CAMP history exhibition at Munday Library. Through photography, artifacts, and paintings, students explored the powerful legacy of CAMP spanning five decades.
Next came Roots of Resilience, a social and environmental justice event featuring an inspiring talk from Susana Almanza, Director of PODER Austin. She shared the history of César Chávez and the enduring impact of his legacy on our nation and the Central Texas community. Attendees participated in a seed planting activity, symbolizing the resilience of farmworkers, the often-unsung heroes and backbone of our food system. As we mark National Farmworkers Awareness Week we honor their contributions, acknowledge their strength, and celebrate how CAMP has empowered the children of farmworkers to pursue higher education here on the hilltop.
The CAMP ceremony followed, highlighting the program’s profound impact through heartfelt speeches from students, alumni, and donors. Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and a devoted supporter of CAMP, spoke movingly about her father’s unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives. The ceremony also featured a captivating performance by Ballet Folklórico and a candle-lighting tribute for donors, allowing students to express their gratitude to those who make this program possible.
The day concluded with Fiesta en el Cielo, a joyous celebration that brought the entire SEU community together for an evening filled with music, food, and dancing. It was a fitting tribute to 53 years of CAMP, uniting past and present in a shared legacy of resilience, achievement, and community.
