Your support of the Smith Alzheimer’s Center provides critical resources that not only enhance the quality of life for families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, but also fuels our relentless pursuit of a cure.
We provide engaging activities for individuals with memory loss through community outreach programs, spearhead advancements in treatment research within our labs and deliver personalized care in our clinics, all of which results in comprehensive support for patients and caregivers in their ongoing battle against a brain disorder that does not relent.
The Smith Alzheimer’s Center provides wrap-around support with a three-pronged approach designed to address needs that exist beyond a diagnosis:
Community outreach
Abilities change throughout the course of Alzheimer’s. Our community programs use art, exercise, brain games and more to engage at their capacity, improving quality of life for the patient and respite for the caregiver. The programs are provided at no cost. In addition, community education helps inform the public to help break stigmas and create a more knowledgeable and accepting environment for all.
Research
Your donations amplify our research as federal grants for our labs’ innovative studies often require foundational research at the local level. The Smith Alzheimer’s Center is pushing the international conversation toward finding a cure, bolstered by the prestigious National Institutes of Health grants awarded to a select few in the U.S. From creating original research in our labs to the latest clinical trials with our clinical research team, your support makes these advancements possible.
Clinical care
Personalized care in the clinic is not only for the patient, but for their caregiver and support system. When it comes to dementia, the road often changes and can do so quickly. We’re here to be a partner for families as they navigate this difficult journey. The Smith Alzheimer’s Center also uses its Memory and Aging Network to connect with clinicians in the SIU Medicine area, providing specialty support to our rural providers.
