Charter Day is Skidmore’s annual celebration of the day we officially became a college! On May 22, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends come together to honor our history and support today’s students.
Skidmore was granted its collegiate charter in 1922, building on Lucy Skidmore Scribner’s vision of a dynamic, creative institution that empowers students to make a meaningful impact in their lives and communities. Since then, our community has grown, but our core values remain the same—creativity, curiosity, caring, diversity, respect, and sustainability.
Charter Day isn’t just about giving—it’s about rallying together to show our pride and make an impact. Every gift to the Skidmore Fund supports scholarships, research, internships, and more.
Join us in shaping Skidmore’s future and proving that Creative Thought Matters more than ever.
Frequently Asked Questions
I already made a gift this year. Can I still give on Charter Day? Absolutely! We love that you’ve already supported Skidmore this year—thank you! Charter Day is your chance to increase your impact and help us unlock challenge funds. Plus, there’s no such thing as being too generous when it comes to supporting Skidmore students.
Is my gift today really making a difference? Yes! Every gift—no matter the size—adds up to create transformative opportunities for students. Scholarships, research opportunities, and global learning experiences all happen because of your support.
Can I create my own challenge or match to inspire others to give? Yes! Challenges are a fantastic way to motivate fellow alumni, friends, and classmates to give. Match gifts from your class, set a participation goal, or challenge friends to contribute a certain amount, it’s up to you.
Do I have to wear green and yellow while making my gift? It’s not required, but if you happen to be decked out in Skidmore colors while clicking "donate," we think that adds some extra good karma. Bonus points for Skidmore sweatshirts, throwback merch, or creatively incorporating a thoroughbred into your outfit.
What else can I do to help? Spread the word! Share the campaign page, post on social media, or send a text to your Skidmore friends. The more people who participate, the greater the impact for today’s students.
But wait... there's more!
On Tuesday, May 20, we hosted a fascinating virtual discussion in honor of Charter Day. If you weren't able to join live, we invite you to watch the recording to learn more about Skidmore’s past in a whole new way!

You may know the history of Skidmore College—but what about the land it stands on?
Thanks to your incredible generosity and Skidmore pride, we surpassed our goal—and set a new record:
$1,208,080 raised from 647 alumni, families, and friends
Every gift tells a story of belief—in our students and in the transformative power of a Skidmore education. Your generosity strengthens the people and programs that make Skidmore exceptional, providing support for scholarships and financial aid, internships, research, study abroad, athletics, the arts, and more.
We are especially grateful to our Lead Charter Day Challengers and to all who created matching opportunities and issued challenges to support the areas of the College that mean the most to them. Your efforts magnified the impact of every gift and inspired others to give generously.
Together, we celebrated the anniversary of Skidmore’s recognition as a four-year liberal arts college and reaffirmed the values that define us today: curiosity, creativity, caring, inclusion, and a bold commitment to our future. Thank you for helping to write the next chapter of our Skidmore story—we are so grateful.
With appreciation,
