Supplemental Instruction: Where STEM Students Flourish and Community Grows
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a key program at the Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME), SF State's primary resource for supporting STEM learning and training future STEM teachers. SI offers a series of one-unit SCI courses supplementing the STEM major gatekeeper classes and is a high impact peer-to-peer teaching and learning program.
Why support SI?
With decreased state funding for education, we need your help to continue the SI Program!
- Students who enroll in SCI courses earn on average a half-letter grade better and are twice as likely to pass the parent course on their first try.
- Students solidify their understanding of course material and develop effective study strategies to excel in their parent course.
- SI fosters peer connections and a sense of student community.
- Student facilitators gain valuable experience in STEM teaching, often building the confidence to pursue a teaching credential or PhD pathway.
What do students think of SI?
“SCI gave me confidence in my abilities.” - SCI 220 student, Spring 2018
“Anytime there was a question, the facilitators went above and beyond in order to make sure the concept in question was understood.” - SCI 115 student, Fall 2018
“Without this course I don't think I would have done as well just by studying on my own.” - SCI 215 student, Spring 2019
Your donation ensures that SI continues to be a thriving program, where STEM student success and retention remain at the forefront of the program's mission.
