The RMU Men’s Rugby program was founded in 2002 and became a university-sanctioned club sport in the same year. The program has experienced significant growth and change over its 15-year history and added a women’s team in 2012.
The men’s team has won the Three Rivers Conference Championship and qualified for the NSCRO national championship tournament three out of the past four seasons. In recent years, the growth of local high school rugby has helped develop a feeder program to allow both of our rugby teams to sustain membership and continue to flourish.
The RMU Rugby Alumni Society is among the most active of our university club sports programs. Formed in 2010 to support the program, they hold a successful annual golf outing and donate approximately $2,500 per year to the team, which allows them to maintain an annual $500 scholarship.
The alumni officers collaborate with our current coaching staff to determine the winner of the scholarship each year. They select the player who they deem best represents RMU Rugby as a student-athlete. Both athletic and academic performance are considered, and more intangible qualities, including leadership, teamwork, effort, and positive attitude, are also weighed into the award decision.
