Gifts to Purdue Orbital Hapsis High Altitude Rockoon Launch contribute to...
Purdue Orbital is a student rocketry organization at Purdue University dedicated to creating a community of thinkers and innovators through developing aerospace technologies.
We need your support to fund the helium and specialized balloon needed to launch a student-built rocket from a high-altitude balloon.
Purdue Orbital was founded in 2015 as a student-run design, build, and test team developing new methods for high-altitude payload launches. Today, we have more than 150 members representing engineering, technology, business, and other disciplines. Since its founding, the Hapsis program has pursued a rockoon: a rocket launched from a high-altitude balloon. Orbital has successfully launched numerous sounding rockets and high-altitude balloons and is now preparing to integrate the two systems.
After years of design and testing, our integrated rockoon system is ready for a full-scale flight in May.
Donations will directly fund the helium and specialized high-altitude balloon needed for a full-scale flight planned for May. This one-time purchase is the final major funding hurdle before the team can travel to Spaceport America and attempt to become the first student organization to launch a sounding rocket from a high-altitude balloon. Any funds raised beyond the cost of approximately 10 helium tanks and a balloon will support flight-critical systems, including avionics, the balloon-detachment system, and ground-station operations.
Without funding, the Hapsis launch cannot proceed as planned. The team would be unable to purchase the required helium supplies and complete launch operations, delaying final system integration and the launch by at least one year. The delay would also prevent graduating students from seeing and demonstrating the completed system; some have spent 4 years helping design, build, and test it.
