About

The MENASA (Middle East, North Africa, South Asia) Initiative was launched with the vision of establishing a sixth cultural center at Portland State University, dedicated to supporting the growing MENASA student community. This vision became a reality with the soft opening of the MENASA Student Center in Fall 2021, marking a significant milestone for representation, advocacy, and cultural celebration on campus.

In November 2023, the center reopened its doors with a revitalized mission, symbolizing a new chapter for MENASA students, culture, and leadership at PSU. Our goal is to serve as a beacon of knowledge about MENASA cultures—not only for our university but for the broader Portland community.

Our Vision & Impact

The MENASA Cultural Center is more than just a space—it is a living, breathing representation of the diversity, history, and vibrancy of MENASA cultures.

🌍 A Space That Tells a Story
Our beautifully designed center reflects international influences through its colors, furniture, and décor, offering an immersive experience into MENASA culture. It serves as both a sanctuary and a window into the rich traditions and histories of our communities.

🎭 High-Quality, Impactful Programming
Through thoughtfully curated events, we address the needs of our students, spread cultural knowledge, and foster connections within and beyond our community. Whether through celebratory gatherings, educational workshops, or dialogue-based initiatives, our programming creates opportunities for cross-cultural learning and bridge-building.

🎓 Student Leadership & Development
We are committed to empowering our students by providing hands-on leadership training and professional development. Our MENASA Leadership Program equips students with essential skills in:

  • Event Planning & Meeting Facilitation
  • Conflict Resolution & Communication
  • Cultural Competency & Community Engagement
  • Digital Marketing & Graphic Design
  • Merchandising, Tabling & Brand Creation
  • Recruitment, Interviewing & Public Speaking

Through these experiences, our students graduate not only with knowledge and cultural pride but also with valuable, real-world skills that prepare them to lead, advocate, and inspire change in their communities.

Join Us in Building the Future!

The MENASA Cultural Center is an evolving, student-driven space dedicated to uplifting voices, fostering belonging, and enriching PSU with the depth and beauty of MENASA cultures. Whether you are a student, faculty member, or community ally, we invite you to engage, learn, and grow with us as we continue building a stronger, more connected future.
