The Hope Services Emergency Financial Assistance Program raises funds that can be distributed to students who have experienced dating/domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. These funds are used to address emergent financial needs in order to support survivors in staying in school. This includes funds for:
- Rent/security deposits
- Utilities
- Groceries
- Essential household items
- School supplies
- And more based on an individual student's needs.
Experiences of dating/domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking negatively impact college graduation rates by causing students to drop out, have lower GPAs, and experience academic disengagement. Survivors often face difficulties with concentration and attendance, and the trauma can lead to decreased motivation and avoidance of academic spaces, which directly hinders their ability to succeed and complete a degree.
These types of violence also impact a survivor's financial situation, interrupting housing, employment, and access to family finances.
By receiving financial support, students are able to address some of their basic needs in order to focus on their education and healing.
A donor’s gift will go directly back to students based on their individual need AND help to prevent future experiences with violence. This can change the trajectory for a student and their children/family. This is based on evidence that completing one’s educational and career goals helps prevent future experiences with violence.
