The Andover Challenge for Equity & Inclusion
Our fundraising challenge is rooted in the Academy’s commitment to racial justice as we dedicate ourselves to creating a more equitable and inclusive community.
This special opportunity offers a dollar-for-dollar match on gifts that directly benefit key initiatives. You can double the impact of your donation thanks to more than $1.2 million in matching funds from current and former Trustees.
We welcome you to direct your gift to a variety of priorities:
Equity and Inclusion funding enables Andover to launch and sustain a wide variety of scholarly and community-based initiatives. Past support has bolstered Opening Blue Channels and the Af-Lat-Am Mentoring Program, both of which provide opportunities for students to make the most of their Andover experiences. Ongoing investments will expand this critical work and give the associate head of school for equity, inclusion, and wellness what they require to nimbly address ongoing needs.
Office of Community and Multicultural Development (CAMD) raises awareness and encourages understanding of differences of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic class, geographical origin, sexual orientation, and more. The office sponsors workshops, lectures, and educational programs for the entire Phillips Academy community.
Endowed scholarships that support students of color:
- The Richard T. Greener Scholarship was established in 1989 by alumnae and alumni in honor of Richard Theodore Greener, Class of 1865, the first African American graduate of Phillips Academy and a noted lawyer, educator, and statesman.
- The Sojourner Truth Fund was created in 1994 by faculty of color in honor of the moral commitment and compelling personality of the great American pilgrim, Sojourner Truth, who in 1863 visited Harriet Beecher Stowe at Andover.
- The Todd A. Isaac Scholarship was founded in 2002 by alumni and friends in memory of Todd A. Isaac, Class of 1990, who died September 11, 2001, in the terrorist attack on New York's World Trade Center.
Andover Outreach programs:
- (MS)2 is a three-summer residential STEM program for African American, Latinx, and Native American high school students from
across the U.S. that prepares them for college and ambitious careers
beyond.
- Andover Bread Loaf (ABL) provides meaningful writing and creative arts programs designed to engage and empower youth and
educators and to promote social justice and educational revitalization.
- Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT) trains, advises, and supports aspiring educators of color and others committed to diversity as they pursue graduate studies, with the goal of increasing ethnic and racial diversity in the teaching profession.
- PALS is a two-year, year-round program that provides academic enrichment, study skills, learning strategies, high school application support, and mentorship for Lawrence, Massachusetts middle schoolers.
Today we are excited to share the news that the Andover Challenge for Equity and Inclusion has surpassed the $1 million mark in funding. We are now nearly 90 percent toward our goal—with more than 900 donors contributing to the challenge so far.
All gifts to our equity and inclusion challenge priorities will continue to be matched dollar-for-dollar until we cross the finish line. Past donors are welcome to extend their impact and encouraged to share this great opportunity with their Andover circle. Thank you all!

Currently 650 alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends have donated over $680,000, and every gift has been matched dollar-for-dollar by current and former Trustees. The fall term begins soon and, as it unfolds, we will share more about how challenge gifts are making a difference on campus.
As the challenge continues, your participation will count in our new fiscal year, and you’ll ensure your meaningful gift will join others in this vital initiative. Take advantage of opportunities to support our Equity and Inclusion priority, plus the Office of Community and Multicultural Development (CAMD), scholarships for students of color, and our community-based Outreach programs.
