About ๐Ÿ“ข

The Department of Communication empowers students to become dynamic communicators, storytellers and leaders across industries. Offering both B.A. and B.S. degrees in Communication Studies and Journalism, as well as a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, our programs combine academic excellence with real-world experience.

Students learn from award-winning faculty recognized nationally and internationally for their teaching, research and creative work. Through personalized advising, one-on-one mentorship and access to state-of-the-art labs, students thrive in engaged learning environments that prepare them for meaningful careers.

From producing documentaries and managing public relations campaigns to planning film festivals and contributing to NIUโ€™s award-winning Northern Star newspaper, students gain hands-on experience that sets them apart. Our graduates go on to lead in media, law, education, marketing, public service and beyond.

The department is also advancing innovative curriculum and research priorities focused on the responsible integration of artificial intelligence, including its impact on the future of work, creative industries, social structures and law and ethics. We remain committed to educating the next generation of communication professionals dedicated to democratic engagement, social responsibility and meaningful impact.
