This spring, more than seventy NYU students from across the university are going Off-Broadway at the American Theatre of Actors to produce, design, and perform the musical Fun Home. In doing so, Tisch New Theatre will empower its young artists to hold leadership positions with the caliber of professionalism they will possess working in the industry. At TNT, we have long been committed to making theatre that reflects the diverse student body of NYU, and we believe wholeheartedly that we as artists are endowed with the responsibility of telling stories that present a fulsome and effective response to issues facing our community.
Fun Home, written by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori, is a five-time Tony Award-winning musical based on the best-selling graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel. Fun Home follows Alison as she revisits her past in a search for answers about her brilliant and troubled closeted gay–or bisexual–father, Bruce Bechdel. Alison realizes that she and her father are more alike than she had thought. But why is it that their stories turned out so differently? Fun Home invites us to explore how our understanding of the world differs from that of our parents. Through your support and our imaginations, we will build a piece of theatre that lets all of us dream for a better world.
