The Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project (PKAP) is an archaeological program based outside of Larnaca, Cyprus at the site of Vigla. Vigla presents a rare opportunity to investigate the critical decades when the major cultural and political transformations of the Hellenistic period (323-31 BC) began. PKAP is a two-pronged program focusing on undergraduate teaching and original research. In 2022, three MSU Denver Students took part in the first Cyprus Study Abroad program and we plan to expand student involvement in 2023 and beyond. Dr. Brandon R. Olson and Dr. Justin Stephens will lead the teaching and research curricula of an archaeological site of tremendous historical and archaeological importance. The primary educational focus will be giving MSU Denver undergraduates an opportunity to expand their historical awareness by actively studying abroad in a safe and accommodating Mediterranean country and receive historical and archaeological training through the departments of History and Anthropology of MSU Denver.
This program also gives MSU Denver students abundant opportunities to travel abroad, collaborate with undergraduate students from multiple institutions (Reed College, Boston University, the University of South Carolina, the University of Michigan), interact with a foreign culture, actively contribute to a groundbreaking archaeological and historical research program, and ultimately change their world view.
