Marietta College's STREAM Camp addresses the ongoing need in Southeastern Ohio to focus on literacy, science, mathematics, and the arts for students who are at-risk for school failure due to socioeconomic status, experiential backgrounds, or disabilities that impact academic performance. Furthermore, several research studies speak to the need for academically focused programs to help address the “summer slide” that occurs in children who live in poverty. While their more affluent peers maintain or increase their academic skills due to family support, summer travel, and enrichment programming, children who live in poverty typically lose a substantial amount of knowledge and skills that were gained during the school year. For many schools in Southeastern Ohio the need to find ways to build background, skills, and motivation in these areas is challenging because of a lack of adequate funding, outdated facilities, and limited teacher development which create barriers. Marietta College’s STREAM Camp will help to bridge this gap by providing a three-week summer opportunity for students to engage in experiences that will enhance motivation and skills in reading and STEM areas while providing important experience and training opportunities for the future educators studying at Marietta College.
