Macalester's thriving Music Department serves over 500 students each semester –majors, minors, and the general student population – in courses, ensembles, and individual studio instruction. Standard courses in music history, world music, music theory, and composition are complemented by electives such as Chinese music, ethnomusicology, American popular music, and topics on individual composers or genres. Ensembles include Concert Choir and Chorale, Orchestra, Chamber Ensembles, MacJazz big band, Jazz and Pop Music Combos, Asian Music Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Early Music Ensemble, Pipe Band, and African Music Ensemble. Lessons are offered on all standard orchestral instruments as well as many others, including mandolin, sitar, bagpipes, and African percussion.
