The Geology Department at Macalester College is committed to providing a quality science education to all students who occupy our classrooms. Our mission is to help Macalester students develop a scientific understanding of the Earth, its history, natural systems, resources, and recent global change. We take a diverse approach to teaching earth science in the liberal arts tradition, and we strive to inspire in our students a life-long passion for learning about the natural world. The geology major is designed to provide students with a solid foundation for further study and professional careers in Earth science-related fields. Geology faculty, in collaboration with undergraduate majors, also endeavor to advance scientific knowledge of the Earth and to communicate this new understanding to the broader community.
Support Hands-On Research in Geology
Collaborating with Macalester Geology faculty on original research gives students invaluable opportunities for learning, discovery, and career development. These experiences help students refine their interests, build critical skills, and prepare for careers or graduate school after Mac.
Each summer, Geology faculty mentor 5 to 15 student researchers in the lab and the field—but many potential collaborations go unfunded due to limited resources. Summer research relies on competitive internal awards and external grants, leaving some students without the chance to participate in these transformative experiences.
Your donation can help expand student access to hands-on research, ensuring more students gain the skills and knowledge they need for success. Join us in supporting the next generation of Mac Geology researchers!
