Support Economics during Give to Macalester Days 2025!
The Economics Department at our campus equips students with analytical and quantitative skills to tackle complex societal issues, fostering the ability to "think like an economist."
As one of the largest departments, we offer a comprehensive curriculum, covering areas such as accounting, development economics, finance, labor economics, and public policy. Through innovative courses and diverse learning opportunities, we prepare students for a wide range of careers, as demonstrated by our graduates’ success in fields such as investment banking, environmental economics, and public policy.

Support MacGPT: Generating the Policy of Tomorrow
MacGPT: Generating the Policy of Tomorrow is a student-developed and student-led, day-long public policy hackathon that brings together students from diverse academic backgrounds to tackle real-world policy challenges. Working in teams, participants spend eight hours developing actionable policy solutions, guided by faculty mentors from across campus. The event concludes with teams presenting their policy briefs to a panel of judges—including Macalester alumni working in public policy—followed by a keynote address and a networking dinner.
First held in 2023, the 2024 MacGPT event brought together 38 student participants, 13 faculty mentors from six departments, and nine Macalester alumni engaged in policymaking. (Note: The 2024 MacGPT event was also featured in Catherine Kane's "7 Days at Macalester" in the Spring 2025 issue of Macalester Today. Read more.)
Your support helps fund event logistics, faculty mentorship, and prizes for outstanding policy ideas. Continued investment will allow MacGPT to grow and establish itself as a cornerstone of public policy innovation at Macalester.
