The critical theory concentration delves into the theoretical and historical foundations of critical theory, examining its diverse applications across the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Originating with the Frankfurt School in Germany, critical theory emerged as a response to dissatisfaction with traditional disciplinary divisions. Key figures in its history include Frankfurt School theorists, French Literary and Critical theorists, and scholars in postcolonial theory, feminism, gender studies, and race and ethnicity studies, drawing on a theoretical background rooted in continental philosophy, formalism, structuralism, psychoanalysis, and non-positivist social theories.
The Critical Theory (CT) Program at Macalester stands out in two major ways:
- We are the only Critical Theory program/concentration at a college or undergraduate institution in the United States. This distinction gives our students a unique advantage when applying to graduate programs in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts/Art History, as well as in careers that value critical thinking and interdisciplinary analysis.
- For the past 12 years, we have hosted an annual Critical Theory symposium that truly "rocks." This event attracts over 100 members of our community each year, featuring engaging talks, dynamic Q&A sessions, and a delectable buffet—as a proper symposium should!
