Life Changing Tropical Biology Course
Dr. Gagliardi- Seeley and Dr. Carello have offered a short-term study abroad course to Costa Rica 13 times over the last 14 years. The last 10 of the trips included a local naturalist and guide Odir Morales. Students learn about tropical biology in a hotspot for biodiversity, see how a country with an emphasis on carbon neutrality functions, and embrace cultural diversity. We travel to many different ecosystems in Costa Rica, and for many of our students, this is the first time they have seen an ocean or tropical rainforest. Our course creates community and a sense of belonging among the students. We wish to see more students have these life changing experiences.
We have learned that the biggest barrier to participation are the travel costs
