The LMU Choirs, under the direction of Dr. T.J. Harper, have been invited to embark upon a performance tour to Costa Rica by the National University of Costa Rica, the Instituto Costarricense Pro Musica Coral, and the National Theater of Costa Rica in May 2023. The concert program will feature choral music celebrating our American heritage and collaborative performances of Costa Rican folk music. Our choir of more than 100 singers consists of both past and present members of our program, who come from all over LMU and beyond: students, faculty, staff, community members, and even alumni. It is our goal to offset costs for current students, so that as many as possible can share in the excitement of this once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunity. Money raised from this campaign will go towards the overall cost of the trip.
The LMU Choirs represent a tradition of artistic excellence with a history that goes back more than 50 years. As stewards of the LMU global vision, the choruses sit in a wonderful position to fully participate in enlivening their creative spirits by participating in performances locally, nationally, and abroad. This invitation represents a level of recognition of the reputational excellence associated with the LMU Choral Music Program, the LMU College of Communication and Fine Arts, and the entire LMU community.
Concert Program
The concert program for this residency was carefully curated by Dr. Harper to showcase the talents of the LMU Choirs. The LMU mission is reflected in our invitation, as people of diverse talents, interests, and cultural backgrounds will join in this enriching artistic endeavor with common purpose.
With its long history of immersive performance and travel, the LMU Choirs have traveled domestically to Massachusetts and Arizona and internationally to Italy, Austria, and France, to name just a few destinations. Over the decades they have sung in world-renowned venues, including L’Église de la Madeleine in Paris, St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, and Carnegie Hall. Each tour has yielded invaluable musical growth and priceless memories. Of course, the past few years have put a halt to most performances by our choirs, even within the Southern California region.
Now, after so much distance between our singers and with so much patience from our students, it is time to provide them with the very opportunities they sought when they joined our choral program. As we begin this new chapter of possibility, it is our hope that the LMU Choirs can help announce to the world that the bluff is alive and roaring—and, indeed, singing—once again.
