Lehigh Racing designs, builds, and races a Formula-style race car to compete in the international Formula SAE collegiate competition each year. All design work, manufacturing, validating, and vehicle testing is carried out by Lehigh students with the goal of developing their engineering skills. The team and the competition provides a means of applying engineering knowledge learned from the classroom in a hands-on setting unlike any other on campus.
This year, the team wants to iterate on the design philosophy that went into our previous several cars, focusing on reducing weight, improving system reliability, and refining driver to car interfaces in order to shorten lap times and ensure a smooth competition season.
Gifts from this campaign will go directly towards helping the team fund food, housing, and travel for our annual trip to the Formula SAE competition at the Michigan International Speedway. Gifts beyond our goal will also assist the team in achieving our goal of improving lap times by allowing us to use lighter, stronger materials and replace heavy components with optimized ones.
The competition will put our race car to the test both on the track and off, beginning with design, cost, and business reports and then moving into dynamic events - acceleration, skidpad, autocross, and a 22km endurance race. The competition serves as the ultimate trial for our race car, and it provides a fantastic learning opportunity for all of the students who are able to attend.
