Gifts to Honduras Immersion Scholarship for Public Health Majors contribute to...
Each spring, students and faculty travel to Honduras for an immersive experience focused on health and social justice. In Honduras, approximately 52% of the population lives on less than US$6.85 per day, and 14% are below the US$2.15-a-day poverty line. We work in rural villages, setting up clinics that serve 200–300 people daily. This demanding experience requires participants to physically and emotionally engage with the realities of poverty and health disparities. It provides a transformative opportunity to understand the social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health outcomes and to practice public health in a resource-limited setting. These experiences foster reflection, compassion, and a sense of responsibility that extend well beyond the classroom.
Access to potable water remains a vital public health challenge in Honduras. Only about 65% of the population has access to basic safe drinking water services, leaving millions dependent on untreated sources that expose them to waterborne diseases. Through a partnership with Mission Honduras, we help provide households with water filters that reduce illnesses and improve daily life. Guaranteeing access to clean water supports not only health but also education, economic opportunity, and human dignity, core values that align with the university’s mission.
