Gifts to Arrupe Social Justice Scholars Program contribute to...
The Arrupe Program this year (thanks to support from the Donnelly School, the Department of Sociology and Criminology, the Peace, Justice, and Human Rights Program, and the Office of Mission & Identity) took students to Washington, D.C. to advocate on Capitol Hill alongside Jesuit Refugee Services on behalf of refugees and migrants.
Students travel to DC, see some of the historical sites, and then spend a day on the Hill meeting with members of Congress and their staffers to raise awareness about the plight of migrants and refugees, as well as ask Congressional leadership to provide support for the programs JRS facilitates. Students get first hand experience of speaking with members of Congress, advocating for causes that align with their (and the university's) values, and civic participation at the federal level.
Students come away not only knowing they have helped the cause of justice, but also with a better sense of how the government works, and how they can be part of it.
Money raised from 2025 Day of Giving will go towards expenses from this year's trip. Once extra expenses are covered from this year, we'll use the extra money for our 2026 trip in order to support and sustain this advocacy trip going forward.
