Department of English

The Department of English is seeking support as part of John Carroll University's Day of Giving. With your generous gift, you will help the Department of English with:

• Student internships: It is increasingly important that our students gain professional skills through internships. With their critical writing, reading, and thinking skills, our students are uniquely equipped to contribute to their employers through these positions. Many internships are not paid, which for practical reasons discourages some from these opportunities. First, we are seeking financial support for students to be able to take unpaid internships. Second, we are seeking new, paid internship opportunities from companies and agencies who can benefit from the skills of English majors who can help them prepare for the world of work.

• Travel funds for students: Many of our English majors and minors are interested in domestic and international travel to supplement their study. Understanding the value of such travel for our students' education, several English faculty members are planning study trips to enhance their courses. With funds available to help students pay for individual and class study trips, the department could make such opportunities a reality for many more English majors and minors.

• Creating a library/lounge for students: To provide additional space for our students to study and socialize, the English department would like to renovate a room in our department for a student library and lounge. Such a space will allow students to gather in a comfortable setting to study together and socialize; allow for small readings and department events; promote community and collaborative learning for our students.
