The past five years have been an exciting period of innovation and productivity in economics, accounting, and business at Hunter College. We’ve rethought how we teach, how students learn, and how our programs prepare graduates for the real world while staying grounded in a simple idea: it’s the education, not the diploma, that matters.

In economics, we redesigned our introductory course to be a big-picture gateway. ECO 100 now focuses on demand and supply and their most provocative applications, giving students a framework to understand the world around them. Along the way, they learn how to evaluate evidence and think critically about research. In our graduate program, students build practical skills in data preparation and analysis through team-based computing, and thesis writers receive detailed, hands-on feedback at every stage of their work.

We’ve also streamlined our accounting program, which is now more popular than ever, with more than 500 majors. Our business certificate program (five courses spanning business, accounting, and economics) continues to grow rapidly, drawing students from across campus who want to expand their career opportunities.

As longtime colleagues retire, we’ve welcomed a new generation of faculty: productive scholars who are also deeply committed teachers. Recently, visiting scholars from peer institutions spent time with us and were struck by how much we accomplish with limited resources. What defines our department isn’t funding. It’s the quality of the educational experience we provide.
