Howard University is launching a relief effort to provide aid to communities in Jamaica experiencing severe devastation recently caused by the Category 5 storm Hurricane Melissa. Recorded as one of the strongest storms ever in the Atlantic Basin, the impact of Hurricane Melissa extended to Haiti, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, causing widespread flooding, catastrophic infrastructure damage, and extensive power outages impacting hundreds of thousands of residents.
Jamaica is home to many members of Howard University’s global community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The University extends its deepest concern and solidarity to all who have been affected by this unprecedented storm, especially those who are connected to the Howard community. Howard University’s strength has always been rooted in community and collective responsibility. As we continue to monitor developments in the region, we stand with the people of Jamaica and all who have been touched by this devastating storm.
