The Yard @ AfroTech

The Yard @ AfroTech is Howard University’s signature cultural and professional activation at Blavity’s AfroTech Conference, the nation’s premier Black innovation gathering. Inspired by Howard’s iconic Yard, this space celebrates HBCU legacy, resilience, and community while connecting students, alumni, and partners in technology and entrepreneurship.

What began in 2023 as a vision has grown into a multi-year initiative. In 2025, The Yard @ expands as a flagship activation — showcasing Howard’s academic and cultural excellence, elevating student and alumni voices, and creating a cultural commons that fosters innovation, leadership, and belonging.

Through our partnership with Blavity, The Yard delivers opportunities that extend far beyond the conference floor:

• Student Access: 100 student tickets secured — 50 for Howard students and 50 for other HBCUs, expanding access and impact across the community.

• Leadership in Action: Faculty and staff participation ensures Howard’s wisdom, guidance, and networks are actively shaping conversations and opening doors for students and alumni alike.

• Spotlight on Excellence: Featured on-stage moments highlight Howard’s leadership, elevating HBCU brilliance and strengthening community connections across industries.

This expansion comes at a time of financial constraint. With federal funding for higher education under pressure, additional support is needed to cover the administrative costs and travel expenses that make participation possible for HU students, staff, and faculty.
