Over the last few decades, the proportion of students receiving arts education has shrunk drastically. It doesn't make sense to me that something so beneficial is seen as unimportant. Most art is done at home because it is not widely integrated into schools. This causes an issue because it does not make art readily available for all children. Not all families have the experience or time to make creativity a priority. It is proven that students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4% drop out rate, which is five times lower than their peers. In the end, I hope my project helps bridge this gap and makes art more available in my community.
I love art and am grateful for the opportunities I have had to create and practice different techniques. I want to share my experience and knowledge with others in a way that benefits the larger community. Casa Chirilagua is an organization in my neighborhood that serves the Latino immigrant population, including many young parents who want to see their children succeed. For my project I will teach art lessons to the kids who attend Casa Chirilagua’s after school programs. Money earned through my campaign will contribute to art supplies to support 40 kids with 8-10 art lessons. Through my lesson plans, I hope to provide creative opportunities and boost self-esteem and creative confidence among the participants.
