About

Celebrating 90 years of Camp May Flather!

Girl Scout camp is the only place made especially for girls to explore, build skills, make memories, and develop an appreciation for nature. Whether it is hiking, archery, rock climbing, or caving, Camp May Flather has for over 90 years provided a safe place where girls develop their leadership skills and take on new challenges to reach their full potential.

Camp May Flather, located in Mt. Solon, Virginia, has been the magical place where girls learn outdoor skills and grow into strong leaders. Camp May Flather is named for Mary “May” Flather, the President of the District Council in 1926. She worked tirelessly to create a permanent place for Girl Scouts to go and camp. And together with matching funds the camp was built and has remained in operation for ninety years. The camp and was dedicated in 1930 by First Lady Lou Henry Hoover, the first-time a First Lady slept in a tent at camp. Camp May Flather has the distinction of being our only camp located in the George Washington National Forest and still has two of the oldest working textile looms in North America.

This Camp Needs Our Love. To celebrate Camp May Flather’s 90th year, the Council is seeking to raise a minimum of $90,000 to fund numerous renovation projects at camp, including new tents, bathrooms, and climbing walls – all to ensure our Girl Scouts have a safe space to create lifelong memories for another century. Help save this treasure and help show our love to this magical camp.

Copied below are the projects we are hoping to fund:

All gifts to support these projects will be in memory of our beloved Don Daggy (July 17, 1934 - September 15, 2020), who was the camp caretaker at May Flather for nearly 40 years.

Celebrating 90 years of Girl Scouting at Camp

“The way Girl Scouts has changed who I am is indescribable. Through unique activities, I’ve become more confident, daring and brave.”

– Girl Scout Senior, Malvika

Girl Scout camp is the only place made especially for girls to explore, build skills, make memories, and develop an appreciation for nature.

Whether it is hiking, archery, rock climbing, or caving, Camp May Flather has for over 90 years provided a safe place where girls develop their leadership skills and take on new challenges to reach their full potential.

Our council is committed to maintaining and upgrading all our eight beautiful camps.  This is how we ensure girls can make new friends in the great outdoors and try new adventures. We are using this special 90th anniversary year to show our love of Camp May Flather and keep it the treasure that it is for so many.
