Learning Resource Center - Embedded Peer Education Program

The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Learning Resource Center will collaborate on a project to bring embedded peer educators into the classroom.

The pilot program will provide 5 faculty each with a designated embedded peer educator attached to the course who will provide support to the students in the course. Embedded peer education is a form of course-embedded academic support where an embedded peer educator regularly attends a section of a course that has been designed around active learning pedagogy, providing tutoring, mentorship, and other academic support. A peer educator who has previously been successful in a course is placed in the classroom, working in partnership with the faculty member, to enhance students’ conceptual understanding, metacognitive abilities, and engagement with the (scholarly) community. This is achieved through in- and out- of class collaborative learning activities. This brings a culture of support and help-seeking to the classroom for the students and at the same time supports faculty in their engagement with students. This offers faculty a professional development opportunity that provides insights into their pedagogy and establishes a framework for them to explore innovative strategies for teaching discipline-specific content in meaningful ways.

Embedded peer education is particularly aligned with Flagler’s Core Values of Transformative Learning, Respectful and Inclusive Community, and Citizenship with Integrity. Programs like these can increase student retention and can support students from the start of their academic journey, leading them to successful outcomes.
