Gifts to Debate Team contribute to...
The Fairmont State University Policy Debate Team is rebuilding a proud campus tradition by giving students opportunities to engage in rigorous research, advanced argumentation, and real-world advocacy. After a decade without a competitive program, the team has rapidly grown into a dynamic academic community that consistently performs at a high level. In just our second year back on the national circuit, Fairmont State debaters have reached elimination rounds at major tournaments hosted by George Mason University, Binghamton University, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and the University of Rochester. Students also attended a national debate camp last summer, strengthening their skills and bringing advanced training back to our campus.
In addition to competitive success, the team has launched a series of public debates that bring students, faculty, and community members together for engaging, accessible discussions on relevant issues. These events - ranging from civic dialogues to creative, community-building debates - have quickly become a hallmark of our campus culture, modeling civil discourse and expanding opportunities for students to practice leadership beyond the tournament circuit.
This initiative matters because it transforms students into leaders. Debate builds the skills employers and graduate programs seek - public speaking, evidence-based reasoning, and resilience under pressure. By supporting travel, training, public debates, and competitive opportunities, this program opens doors, builds student confidence, and elevates Fairmont State’s academic profile. Your contribution directly empowers students to find their voices - and ensures this growing program continues to soar.
