About

The Computer Science program is one of the top-ranked programs at Fairmont State University in terms of steady enrollment, steady graduation rate, student research, collaboration with the local High-Tech industry, and a very successful job placement record. The program has a strong tradition in excellence demonstrated by the employers' acceptance of our students for internships and job positions.

The Computer Science program at Fairmont State University strives to graduate students with strong computer science skills that can prepare them to fulfill the industry's needs. The CS curriculum is based on national standards and offers a well-rounded education to our majors. We take pride in providing transformational opportunities to our diverse group of students (including non-traditional and disadvantaged students) to prepare them to compete with their peers from other institutions at the highest level. Our program can only improve and continue to be one of the leading ones among the smaller institutions in the state.

While we are a fairly low-cost, low-need program, we can still see the use of additional funding to support our students. Specifically, anything that can be used towards student scholarships would be a welcome addition to the program. Additionally, we occasionally see students with the need of a good computer that we think could be remedied by providing good laptops that our students could temporarily check out for some duration. We have a couple of programming classes that involve labs. These classes build the foundations for our majors. Since we don't have graduate programs and graduate teaching assistants, it will be really helpful to be able to hire undergraduate students as lab assistants with some external funding.
