About

The Outdoor Leadership major at Fairmont State University is built on a transformative vision: to shape ethical, confident, and highly skilled leaders who thrive outdoors and carry those strengths into the communities and industries they serve. This interdisciplinary program blends the liberal arts, science, business, education, and hands-on professional training to give students the technical expertise, experiential skills, and leadership capacity to guide, teach, plan, and problem-solve in real-world outdoor environments. Students learn in classrooms, forests, rivers, and mountains, gaining skills in navigation, risk management, program planning, geospatial methods, environmental stewardship, and interpersonal leadership, all while developing the adventurous spirit and sense of place that define this field. At its core, the program is a pathway to meaningful work in a rapidly growing outdoor economy, preparing graduates for careers in outdoor education, adventure guiding, park interpretation, environmental conservation, nature-based therapy, and more.

Donor support can make the difference between access and limitation for these future leaders. Scholarships open doors for first-generation and rural students who otherwise may not be able to pursue a degree rich in field-based learning. Your investment also provides essential academic opportunities that elevate this major from strong to exceptional, enabling support for off-campus expeditions, required field practicums, and high-cost professional certifications such as wilderness medicine, climbing instruction, paddling leadership, and outdoor risk management. These experiences are not extras; they are industry-standard credentials that enhance employability, ensure safety, and position graduates to meet the growing national and West Virginia demand for trained outdoor professionals. Your generosity empowers students to step into the outdoors with competence, confidence, and purpose. It ensures that Fairmont State University becomes a leader in preparing the next generation of outdoor professionals, educators, and stewards.
