A Letter from Damian Jones and Steve McManus

Dear Burke Community,

On April 22, 2022, the Burke community endured what every modern school fears. A sniper with an automatic arsenal targeted our campus, directing more than 200 rounds on the 2nd floor bridge that connects our Middle and High School buildings, and at our carpool line below. The shooting seriously injured three members of our school community, caused additional minor injuries, and significantly damaged the building.

The shooting also inflicted fear and trauma upon the students, faculty, staff, coaches and caregivers within the building that day, and on those watching helplessly from the outside, sick with worry about their children, parents, spouses, teachers, friends, and colleagues. The trauma rippled out to our extended family, too — our alums, our past parents, our grandparents, past faculty and staff, and neighbors — who know Burke to be a place of joy and safety. Each time the news is flooded with school violence, our own fears are reignited as well

Yet we are grateful for so much. Our faculty, staff and students knew what to do, and did everything right. There are countless stories of heroism as our community fled to safety, and countless stories of beautiful humanity as our community comforted and cared for each other over the six hour lockdown, and in the days and weeks since. We are fortunate that our most injured community members are on a steady, albeit significant, road to recovery and that the  attack was ultimately not deadly. We’re grateful that it seems the perpetrator has no known connection to Burke.

We are now on a journey - a journey to reclaim our home as a place of safety
and comfort, to heal the hearts, minds and bodies of our
community members, and to replace fear with peace and joy.

There has been an amazing outpouring of interest in supporting the school, and we’ve thought carefully about how to respond to your generosity. Healing will undoubtedly take time and resources as we seek to be responsive over the coming months and years. To that end, we are proud to announce Burke’s Fund for Restoration, Healing and Joy.

Donations collected through the Fund will be stewarded by key school administrators, with oversight from the Board, and be directed to activities that help our community continue to heal and move forward.  At this time, it is anticipated that funds could be used for social-emotional programming, professional development for faculty and staff, continued therapeutic services, community building activities, additional security measures, building restoration projects, and any activities that return joy and comfort to our community this year and beyond.

This is a difficult moment for our Burke, but we know that the strength of this community and our love and care for each other will help us get through. Thank you to our extended Burke family for all your kindness and your acts of support at this time.

Our Best,

Damian R. Jones, Head of School
Steve McManus, Incoming Head of School
