Dr. Stuart Anderson is one of the most beloved retired faculty members from the Department of Mathematics at East Texas A&M University (formerly Texas A&M University-Commerce). He served the university from 1973 to 2019—an incredible 46 years—during which he led the department for 15 years and later returned as Interim Department Head to support his colleagues during a leadership transition.
Throughout his long career, Dr. Anderson inspired hundreds of student, both in and out of the classroom. Known for his love of mathematical history, his banjo-playing talents, and his dry sense of humor, he brought warmth and creativity to every lesson and event. His dedication to teaching excellence earned him the prestigious Regents Professor Award—the A&M System’s highest faculty honor—and the Minnie Piper Award, a national recognition for innovative educators.
Even in retirement, Dr. Anderson remains a cherished presence—greeted with smiles, laughter, and “Hail, Stuart” whenever he visits the department. In recognition of his lasting impact, friends and family are establishing this scholarship in his honor to continue his legacy of excellence, mentorship, and joy in mathematics at East Texas A&M University.
