Melvyn and Marilyn Ottinger came to Dalton in 1967 when he was on the charter faculty of the new Dalton Junior College.
During his 33-year tenure at Dalton State, Melvyn was head coach of the men’s basketball team from 1968 to 1978. In that time, he compiled a 231-78 record, a marvelous .747 winning percentage, and his teams held national top ten rankings in eight of the ten years they played. Division championships, state championships, regional championships, and trips to the national championship tournament – it all happened here thanks to Coach Ottinger.
To celebrate the impact that Melvyn and Marilyn Ottinger have had here at Dalton State and in our community, their family and friends are joining together to endow this new scholarship in their names.
