Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded at Howard University in 1908 and the Iota Omicron Chapter was established on the campus of the College of Charleston in 1975. The members of Iota Omicron regularly support the Ronald McDonald House and volunteer with the Lowcountry Foodbank.
