The Department of Biology is making changes aimed at having our undergraduate majors think of the department as something more interesting than someplace to take classes. We encourage students to approach the department and its faculty as a source of biology knowledge and discovery.

One exciting new development is an undergraduate research facility that we call “bio[box]”. Bio[box] is a laboratory full of state-of-the-art instruments for analyzing and quantifying DNA. Some of these instruments are not available anywhere else on campus.

To use the bio[box], undergraduates work with Biology faculty to write a small research project proposal, which they submit to the bio[box] oversight committee who review the proposal’s merits and decide whether to support and fund the project.

Our undergraduates are industrious and eager to launch their own research projects, which is why we need your help. While we have the first phase of the facility built, we need to be able to fund students’ research expenses. From the cost of instrument usage time to the disposable supplies consumed in each project, these expenses add up. We don’t want a lack of department funding to inhibit students’ abilities to ask great questions and further their education.

We hope that you will contribute to our department fund to support our undergraduate researchers working in bio[box].

Thank you very much for any help you can give!
