Please consider a gift to Sweepstakes this Giving CMU Day!
Sweepstakes, also known as Buggy, is Carnegie Mellon University’s largest sport event with a 100+ year legacy. This unique sport has been held behind the CMU campus since 1920. It is part uphill relay race (in which the “baton” is a vehicle with a driver inside, pushed by runners), and part downhill gravity racing with exciting turns and speeds up to 40 mph.
Each Buggy team is made up of current students, ranging across disciplines, who have designed and built these aerodynamic vehicles and have practiced year round. After a year's worth of practices during early morning weekend practices, Sweepstakes holds their annual races during Spring Carnival in April.
This event is primarily supported by the Student Activities Fee. Unfortunately, this does not cover all the costs that Raceday brings or fund new opportunities and initiatives for the event to evolve.
Your donation will help fund opportunities to expand the event and accommodate more spectators, provide state of the art technology for timing and broadcasts, and support students’ engineering work.
Membership in this student organization and participation in its programs/activities are available to all students at the University, regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, or any other protected class.
