The Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology (CMIST) is a university-wide initiative dedicated to the wise development, use and governance of emerging technologies reshaping war, peace and society. As the home of Political Science and International Relations at Carnegie Mellon, CMIST unites the university’s strengths in computer science and engineering with its tradition of cross-disciplinary research. A core part of CMIST’s mission is strengthening civics education among students. Our democracy depends on a new generation that understands the rule of law, the responsibilities of self-government and the civic implications of technology. CMIST’s initiatives ensure students are not only learning how technologies function, but also how they intersect with laws, policies, ethics and democratic values.
Through the study of politics and law, students learn to tackle challenging ideas, think clearly, navigate disagreements and engage respectfully with others — preparing them to strengthen democracy and thrive in an interconnected world.
Your support on Giving CMU Day enables CMIST to expand this work — creating opportunities for students to connect technological innovation with civic responsibility.
