The Field-Based Learning, Outreach, and Workforce Scholarship (FLOWS) Program is a collaborative, cross-campus initiative uniting students and faculty from CSUSB, CSUN, and Cal Poly SLO. Through hands-on fieldwork, community engagement, and geospatial research, FLOWS empowers CSU students to explore water, land, and environmental issues across California - while integrating both Western science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
Many CSU students have the passion to lead California's environmental future, but financial barriers often limit access to field-based learning. FLOWS removes these barriers by providing stipends, field gear, housing, and guided field experiences, ensuring that all students regardless of background can participate fully,
Across landscapes such as the Chorro Creek Watershed and the San Bernardino Mountains, FLOWSters collaborate with Tribal leaders, conservation organizations, and water practitioners to explore watershed health, water quality, soil and vegetation monitoring, GIS mapping, and community based education.
Investing in FLOWS means investing in student success and California's environmental resilience. Your support helps:
- Open pathways for first-generation and historically excluded students
- Build a diverse, knowledgeable, community-rooted environmental workforce
- Strengthen California's capacity for equitable, science based water and land stewardship
