Coyote Garden at CSUSB
The Coyote Garden at CSUSB is a student-led and maintained space that has served as an important environmental and educational resource for our campus community since its establishment in 2018 and its adoption by ASI in 2021. The garden fosters community and gardening education through:
- Classroom visits
- Group clean-ups
- Volunteer opportunities
- Workshops
Sustainable Practices
The Coyote Garden implements various techniques to use resources efficiently:
- Drip irrigation is employed to deliver water directly to the soil, minimizing evaporation and loss due to strong winds.
- Drought-tolerant herbs, such as rosemary, lemongrass, and lavender, are planted to thrive in dry climates while attracting beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.
- No pesticides or toxic chemicals are used for weed or pest management; instead, weeds are pulled by hand, and sprays made of cinnamon and mint oil are utilized to deter pests.
Support and Maintenance Needs
The garden has been built, maintained, and cleaned up by CSUSB students using the most sustainable and organic practices. However, its growth has led to higher operational needs and additional assistance is required in several areas:
- Funds donated to this project will be used for supplies needed to maintain the garden.
- Professional services are necessary to manage challenging weeds and stake fruit trees for proper growth.
- Donations will help ensure the garden remains a clean and accessible space for students.
Additionally, funds will provide the garden with:
- Shade structures
- Benches for students to enjoy and unwind during breaks from class
Contribute to the Garden's Future
Your donations will contribute to the intended progress of the garden and the expansion of its resources. A clean, well-maintained, and accessible garden will allow the campus community to learn, enjoy, and further nurture their connection to CSUSB.
