MEETING THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY
The Seahawk Marketplace Food Pantry has served more than 1,000 students so far this academic year, and the need for food assistance shows no sign of slowing down.
Hunger is a reality faced by many students at Broward College. Whether our students skip a meal because they are low on funds or they don't consume enough quality food, without access to nutritious meals, it can be difficult to focus on learning β especially when you donβt know where your next meal will come from.
According to a 2021-2022 survey, 61% of Broward College students had to cut the size of meals because they didn't have enough money for food, and 51% reported going hungry or skipping meals due to not enough money for food.
To continue meeting the demand for food assistance, you have an opportunity to help feed a Seahawk! With your gift, we are one step closer to reducing the number of food insecure students at Broward College. Any gift, no matter the size, will impact the life of a Seahawk during their time of need.

Our friends at GEICO will match all gifts, dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000 towards Seahawk Marketplace. Every dollar makes a difference in changing students' lives and making a tangible impact on alleviating food insecurities, providing students with healthy balanced meals so that they can focus, and removing the stress and uncertainty of not having the resources needed to access food and hygiene items.

Thank You!
Together, 70 supporters raised more than $14,000 to make a difference for Broward College students. From Alumni, Friends, Faculty & Staff, Students, and so many others, the enthusiasm to see the College succeed has been inspiring!
We are so thankful for everyone that gave, shared, and spread the word about the importance of creating access to healthy foods and resources for Broward College students through Seahawk Marketplace.

Seahawk Marketplace is one of the services available to students through Seahawk Outreach Services (SOS). The Mission of Seahawk Outreach Services is to provide wrap-around services and holistic support to students by connecting them to key campus resources and referring them to community organizations. The goal of SOS is to help reduce food and housing insecurities, stress/mental health challenges, homelessness, and financial obstacles among our student population. Food insecurity is one of the top areas of requested assistance self-reported by students through SOS.
At Broward College, providing resources comes not only through creating accessibility to healthy foods and nutrition education, but also access to hygiene items.
The top requested hygiene items by students are antibacterial deodorant soap, disposable razors, feminine hygiene products and dental care items.
Please consider joining us in making an impact on Broward College students by making a gift that will impact the thousands of students a year who request assistance through SOS and Seahawk Marketplace.

On average, students visit the Seahawk Marketplace food pantries or food distribution events on campus 15 times per year. Together, the Broward College community of, faculty, staff, parents, fellow students, alumni, and friends can make a tremendous impact on student success through investing in resources to increase the accessibility of nutritious meals for students. Higher quality diets are associated with not only improving quality of life, but increased academic performance.

Seahawk Marketplace is a resource for all Broward College students. It alleviates the burden of worry from its students, who are often wondering what theyβre going to have on their table for dinner. Whether helping provide nutritious food for themselves and their families, to students who are homeless or couch-hopping; there are students from all backgrounds that are attending classes and are determined not to let their situation limit them.
Tours from classes and other on campus exposure helps eliminate the stigma of receiving help to alleviate student stress. Seahawk Marketplace is supported by staff, community partners, and more than 50 student volunteers committed to the wellbeing of Broward College students.

Everyone is encouraged to stop by and grab a healthy snack free of charge between classes at Seahawk Marketplace. Baskets of oranges and apples are frequently on display outside the door.

84% of students started seeking food assistance from the college as a result of COVID-19. According to a student survey in 2021-2022, 51% of students said that they went hungry or did not eat because of not having enough money for food, and this number was reduced to 34% after the opening of the first Seahawk Marketplace and coordinated food distribution events on campuses.
Educational attainment and success is not only tied to the classroom, but in the resources to help individuals reach their full potential. Finding a way to address food insecurity among students is one way Broward College came together in the face of the pandemic to help students.
