The Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS) pioneers research to advance a sustainable and equitable future. Our focus on planetary and environmental health, climate governance and sustainability transitions, and energy systems of the future is grounded in equity and justice, robust data science, and real-world impact.
IGS has an ambitious goal: addressing society's biggest sustainability challenges through interdisciplinary, data-driven research with real-world impact. Together, Boston University scholars are working to advance a resilient and equitable future.
To do this, research at IGS focuses on three key areas with an emphasis on data and rigor, equity and justice, and transformative impact through policy change, industry engagement, and social action:
- Planetary and Environmental Health: Finding coping strategies and remedies to protect the health of the planet.
- Energy Systems of the Future: Building sustainable energy systems to meet urgent climate goals.
- Climate Governance and Sustainability Transitions: Accelerating large-scale climate action with new systems of climate governance, policy mechanisms, and business models.
We hope you share our belief that the time for action on climate change and justice is now—not years from now. And we hope you share our belief that Boston University has the people, the resources, and the will to get things done. We can see a way toward a more sustainable future, and we hope you can, too. With your help, we will get there sooner.
