Donors to The Howard Thurman Center Fund are active participants in the Center’s mission to honor the legacy of Howard Thurman, a philosopher, educator, and civil rights leader who served as the Dean of Marsh Chapel from 1953 to 1965. Howard Thurman said that meaningful and creative shared experiences between people of different backgrounds could break down barriers. The Center takes this philosophical approach to community building, a mission and goal that is critical in the times we’re living in. Students, faculty, staff, and the wider Boston community can connect with each other through games, crafts, music, and unique and thought-provoking events organized by The Howard Thurman Center staff.
Donors would be supporting programs and initiatives such as:
- Coffee and Conversation, our signature civil discourse and dialogue program
- The Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
- The Howard and Sue Bailey Thurman Series, a public education and archive series based on the work of The Thurmans
- The Common Ground Grant, funds used to support student organization’s events and students attending conferences
- American Civil Rights and Sights Hub Co-Curricular, a hub course designed for students to visit archives and historic civil rights sites to unpack history, ethics, and leadership
With your help, the search for common ground—initiated by Howard Thurman more than six decades ago—will take on extra dimensions, open new hearts, and shape even more lives. Thank you for considering a gift to the Howard Thurman Center on BU Giving Day.
