Every scientist has a first day.
This summer, help a local high school student take theirs in a real BU research lab.
GROW (Greater Research Opportunities for the Workforce) is a six-week summer program that places rising high school seniors in labs across BU. For 10 years, GROW has shown students that everyone belongs in STEM.
Why GROW Matters
Your support helps increase access to hands-on research experiences and mentorship for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity. GROW encourages all students underrepresented in STEM to pursue study/careers in science & technology.
With STEM outreach funding shrinking, many students are losing access to hands-on learning experiences that can shape their futures. When you give to GROW, you help Boston-area students to participate by defraying transportation costs and offsetting lost income, ensuring finances aren’t a barrier to participation.
Your Impact
All gifts go directly to student participant stipends. These stipends are essential to defray the cost of attendance and broaden participation. Your gift helps local students grow by:
- Participating in cutting-edge research in a collaborative group setting
- Receiving direct mentorship from PIs, graduate students, and lab techs at an R1 research university
- Meeting several times a week with their cohort and the Program Manager to set goals and report research progress
- Hearing guest speakers and going on field trips to learn about research, higher education, and careers in STEM
- Developing communication skills by presenting an academic poster at a summer symposium
Over the last decade, our ~200 alumni have gone on to study at BU, MIT, Northeastern, Harvard, Columbia, Tufts, UC Berkeley, and other top institutions. They work in medical labs, research institutes, engineering firms, and other fields across STEM.
Last year, 100% of GROW students felt they grew more confident in their ability to contribute to science, and 93% said the experience encouraged them to continue in STEM research and fields of study.
Join us this Giving Day in opening the door to the next generation of young scientists.
