The Computer Science Department is dedicated to advancing the field of computing through a blend of innovative teaching, cutting-edge research, and real-world application. With a diverse and intellectually vibrant community, the department offers a comprehensive and flexible curriculum that prepares students for a wide range of careers in the rapidly evolving tech industry.
The department serves over 2,000 students across its undergraduate, master's, and PhD programs and is home to nine research groups that vary in focus from theory to networks to artificial intelligence. The department also prides itself on its inclusive and supportive environment, with student organizations such as Women in Computer Science (WiCS), Girls Who Code BU, and Tech Together (formerly She Hacks), providing networking, professional development, and community-building opportunities for all students.
At BUCS, donations from our alumni and friends go back to those who matter most: our students. Donations to BUCS:
- Support the travel of several computer science students to the Grace Hopper Celebration for Women and Non-Binary People in Computing and the Richard Tapia Celebration for Diversity in Computing.
- Fund the BU Spark! program, which supports student groups such as Girls Who Code BU, Women in Computer Science (WiCS), and Tech Together (formerly known as She Hacks). Student groups have used the funds to send students to conferences, invite industry leaders to campus for networking, and provide professional development workshops.
- Allow us to support innovative classes that incorporate activities like poster sessions and competitive programming competitions into the courses, which help students expand their skills and prepare for graduate school or careers in industry.
Through a combination of technical education, interdisciplinary exploration, and real-world experience, the CAS Computer Science Department at Boston University prepares students to be leaders in the digital age, equipped to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation in the world of technology. The department also prides itself on its inclusive and supportive environment, and it prioritizes programming and support for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
This work is made possible by the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students and the generous contributions from our community and supporters.
