AGNI, housed at Boston University since 1986, is one of the most prestigious literary magazines in the United States, long admired for discovering and publishing writers who intuit the character of our times while giving voice to an animating uniqueness. Founded in 1972 during a period of political and cultural turmoil (Watergate, Vietnam . . .), AGNI became known for bringing new and powerful imaginations to the fore while countering the prevailing political winds. Since that time, seven AGNI writers have gone on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature; today, we are publishing writers who will go on to win the next generation of awards. We know because it’s already happening.
Now AGNI needs your support to continue its mission of publishing the essential groundbreaking literature of our time.
Here’s what you’d be supporting:
- Two 250-page print issues a year packed with fiction, poetry, and essays by writers working at the highest artistic level.
- AGNI Online, which publishes topical personal essays, reviews, and conversations twice monthly
- Our network of editors—first-rate writers themselves—who cull through nearly 15,000 unsolicited submissions a year while also directly seeking work from established writers.
- One of America’s foremost literary tastemakers. AGNI’s guiding ideal, as it has been from the first, is the perpetuation of a vital, stimulating, and transformative reading experience. We put a premium on cosmopolitanism, truth telling, and edge-testing innovation, promoting all three as an active antidote to media spin and institution-speak. We prefer intuition-speak. As champions of idiosyncrasy, we believe too that nothing guards against AI-generated thought and writing more than our emphasis on the particular, the never-before/never-again, the close-to-the-bone sensibility that emerges from each piece that we discover, accept, and work tirelessly to share.
By donating to AGNI, you are supporting this work—and helping to sustain a vibrant literary culture.
