At Bloomsburg University, the Literary Arts program fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a deep appreciation for the written word. Through two cornerstone initiatives—the Student Writing Awards and Visiting Writers Series—we provide transformative experiences for our students, but we need your help to keep these programs thriving.

Student Writing Awards

Each year, we recognize outstanding student work in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and critical essays through our Student Writing Awards. These awards provide not only a monetary prize but also the opportunity for students to see their work published in the university’s student literary journal. These recognitions boost students' confidence, validate their hard work, and encourage them to pursue their passions in writing and the literary arts. However, our funding is running low, and we need your support to continue rewarding and uplifting emerging writers.

Visiting Writers Series

Since 2000, the Big Dog Reading Series has brought nationally and regionally acclaimed poets and writers to Bloomsburg’s campus. These visiting writers give public readings, engage with students in classroom discussions, and share invaluable insights during intimate faculty-student dinners. Over the years, we’ve hosted Pulitzer Prize winners, U.S. Poet Laureates, and National Book Award recipients—giving students direct access to literary greatness. However, with recent funding cuts, we have had to scale back this beloved program, limiting the opportunities for students to connect with inspiring literary figures.
